A Romantic ‘Lie’
If you are a lover of the films of 1980s; moreover films of Balachander and Bharatiraja (like Marocharitra, Dance Master, Aradhana, etc), then this is the film for you. But having made a love story for this generation, K Balachander style of film would not really help in getting audience to the theatres. Moreover it being dubbed film from Tamil language and flavour of Tamil is striking at you almost in every frame, Abadam has very remote chances of making it big at the box office!
Story of two lovers presented through a game played by luck and fate characters is novel idea but the same thing seems to not have appealed to our cine-goers since it is verbose. Good camerawork, decent performance by Uday Kiran and foot-tapping music makes this a good film worth watching, but will there be takers? No because it is very slow paced and doesn’t look at the youth of this generation. Balachander seems to have got stuck in 1980s and his depiction of youth is that of those times and not this generation!
The ‘Lie’ story
Vemana, played by Uday Kiran, is son of a politician Kalidas. Having brought bad name to his father Vemana decides to leave the city for sometime and once people forget about his behaviour he plans to comeback. For this he choose to go to Colombo. Colombo makes sense for Tamil audience because of the Tamil politics involved there. But the same sounds irrelevant to Telugu audience.
Vemana changes his name to Balu and keeps moving in Colombo, there he meets the heroine Shilpa (Vimala) and falls in love with her. She rejects his love. She prefers study rather than fall in love. But our hero is behind her and tries to convince her at any cost.
Here enters Balachander the director. He introduces two imaginary characters called Luck (played by Balachander) and fate (played by Prakash Raj). These two represent the desire and reality of every man. Luck tries to push the love of Vemana, while fate talks about reality.
In reality we are introduced to another character called Roshan who comes as a competitor for Vemana alias Balu’s love for Shilpa. Vemana overcomes him but finally Shilpa requests him to leave him alone, though she loves him since she wants to concentrate of studies. Vemana walks away from her life, but one ‘lie’ is played to both hero and heroine and things fall apart…
Analysis
Uday Kiran’s performance is best till date. He proves himself to be an actor and if given more chances might become a star once again… but alas! He is handsome in this film and is dialogue delivery has improved very much. Some credit should go to Balachander also.
Vimala is good and suits the role well. Sridhar, choreographer is doing a full-fledged role for the first time and has done well. Prakash Raj and Balachander have little, but important, roles to play. While Prakash Raj is his usual self, Balachander was a revelation. He has done very well.
Biju Vishwanath has captured the beauty of Colombo beaches very well in his lenses. Music of Vidyasagar is impressive. The ‘la” song and the breathless song are highlights of the film, and other songs too are very impressive. All the departments have contributed to enhance the film and none have dominated the story or the director in any respect.
This is yet another K Balachander mark film. It reminds of his earlier films. A neat film with cut-to-cut style; no graphics and lewd dance movements Abadam is a good entertainer, but will not make any impact on box-office since it lacks on various fronts that make our people sit in their chairs… | |
