S.V.Krishna Reddy's latest venture is 'Bahumathi' starring Venu and
Sangeetha. It's screenplay and storyline has been lifted from a
Hollywood movie 'It Could Happen To You'. The nativisation has been,
nonetheless, done well. 'Bahumathi' passes two hours plus
effortlessly.
Plot:
Venkat Ramana (Venu) is a sincere police officer, honest to the core and
full of ideals. His wife Banumati (Sangeetha) is a nag, and tortures him
endlessly to get home bribes and riches, which he refuses to do so. He
buys a lottery ticket on her insistence, eats at a restaurant and has no
money for the bill. He tells the waitress there that he will give her
half of the lottery if he wins-he does, and keeps his word. Much to his
wife's disdain, he gives her 5 crores and media speculation begins while
his wife doesn't stop harassing him. What happens to this honest cop is
the rest of the plot.
Story, Screenplay and Direction: The movie is based on the
Hollywood movie 'It Could Happen To You' starring Nicolas Cage and
Bridget Fonda, with a few obvious changes. A Hindi movie 'Bade Dilwala'
has also been made starring Sunil Shetty and Priya Gill. So no points
for originality here. The direction is typical of S.V.Krishna Reddy,
with humorous sequences and well-defined and flat characters that we
remember later. Even the titles are played with a background score
copied from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and A.R.Rahman's 'Gurus of
Peace'.
The ending is good, without the regular drama where the wife falls at
her husband's feet, etc. This SVK has done in many of his movies, so
here we watch something slightly different. Sangeetha's character is
well-written and humorous.
Krishna Bhagawan and his wife, with her 'Bagunda?' tag for every thing
she says is funny. Brahmanandam and Ali's track is silly, but generates
laughs. Kota Srinivasa Rao and Suneel's repartee is good. Suneel and
Ali, both dance much better than Venu. The courtroom scenes with Suneel
and Kota playing lawyers is good.
Dialouge of the Day: When Krishna Bhagawan tells Venu to leave
his wife because she is such a nag, Venu replies promptly 'Signal raledani cell phone parestama?'
Scene to watch out for:
Before the announcement of the lottery is made, the tension keeps building up and advertisements test the already irritable Banumati's patience.
Performances: Venu is convincing and does not overdo anything. Sangeetha is fun to watch as a greedy, ill-tempered woman. Shabna suits the role of Dharani. Brahmanandam, Ali and Krishna Bhagawan are good. Kota and Suneel, Pavala Shyamala and Sudeepa have great comic timing.
Song and Dance: Music is mediocre. Suneel's song is good, but could have done with a few more steps to show off Suneel's caliber and few less pounds on Suneel. It could have rocked, but its just okay now. Ali's dance on all popular numbers is good. | |
