Somayajulu passes away

Veteran stage artiste and film actor J.V. Somayajulu passed away at a private hospital here on Tuesday. He was 76 and ailing from an acute respiratory disease for sometime. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
J.V. Somayajulu became a household name with the path-breaking film, `Sankarabharanam' directed by renowned filmmaker, K. Viswanath, in the 80s wherein he essayed the role of a Carnatic guru battling the influence of Western music and keeping alive the rich tradition of Carnatic music. The film transcended all regional and linguistic barriers and went onto win mass and critical acclaim all over the world.
News of Sankara Sastry's death, as he is popular in Telugu households, was received with shock all over the State. Apart from Sankarabharanam, his roles in films like `Vamsa Vriksham', `Saptapadi', `Swathi Muthyam', `Thyagayya' and `Vijeta' went down well with the Telugus.
